Pop Base: The Newest Stars Dominating 2024

This year we have seen many new artists, musicians, and other creatives burst onto the scene and make a splash in Hollywood. These stars have had breakout roles, buzz-worthy songs, and performances, among number onesongs and award nominations and wins. Check out this list of some of 2024’s brightest new stars.

This Philadelphia native started her career after receivinga master's degree in 2011 at the Yale School of Drama. Not long after, Randolph was cast in the West End’s production of Ghost: the Musical as Oda Mae Brown. Randolph was hired to fill in for an actor who was injuredand performed as Brown for about a month. Many praised her performance, and she received a nomination at the Tony Awards for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

Since then, Randolph has acted in many productions including The Angriest Man in Brooklyn (2014) and started to receive mainstream attention after roles in Dolemite Is My Name (2019) and The United States vs. Billie Holiday (2020). This success became bigger than ever after her performance in 2023’s comedy/drama The Holdovers.Randolph portrayed cafeteria manager Mary Lamb, and the role led Randolph to receive 36 award wins.

Awards include an Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, a Critics' Choice Movie Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. In her Oscar acceptance speech she said, "For so long, I've always wanted to be different. And now I realize I just need to be myself, and I thank you for seeing me".

Along with The Holdovers, she has also been a part of the recurring cast of the hit Hulu series Only Murders in The Building. Her role in the show has led to her receiving a nomination for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series at the upcoming ceremony. Her talent and recent successes have led her to be cast in multiple upcoming films. These films include the action thriller film, Shadow Force, action-comedy Bride Hard, rom-com Eternity, and a currently untitled Pharrell Williams musical film.

 

English native, Nicholas Galitzine began his career in 2014 after getting a role in the film The Beat Beneath My Feet (2014). Five years later, Galitzine portrayed Elliot Lefevre in the Netflix horror drama series Chambers, which was Galitzine’s first significant role. From 2019 to 2022, he was cast in many films including The Craft: Legacy (2020), Cinderella (2021) and Purple Hearts (2022). Galitzine’s popularity started to grow after being featured in the sex comedy film Bottoms (2023).

This popularity would continue to grow after he starred in the Prime Video gay rom-com Red, White, & Royal Blue(2023). In the movie based on the 2019 novel, Galitzine portrays a British prince who falls in love with the president of the U.S.’s son. The movie was received well and isnominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie. He also starred in the psychodrama series Mary & George, alongside Julianne Moore. The series was released on April 5th, on Starz. A month later, he starred in another Prime Video movie, this time alongside Anne Hathaway. The Idea of You follows a single woman who falls in love with popular music artist. Future works include the live action Masters of the Universe as He-Man and a mystery comedy film Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie.

 

Virgina native, Tommy Richman started taking vocal lessons and performing opera as a child. In 2016, he began releasing music on Soundcloud and Spotify. He continued releasing music through college, and before his sophomore year, he dropped out to focus on music after his song "Pleasantville" was well received. In 2023, Richman got signed to ISO Supremacy, an independentrecord label owned by R&B singer Brent Faiyaz. After getting signed, he opened for Faiyaz's F*ck the World, It'sa Wasteland Tour.

His success started to grow after he started teasing his upcoming single "Million Dollar Baby" on TikTok. The teasers became extremely popular, and the song was released on April 26. After release, the song achieved 38 million streams and debuted at two on the Billboard 100. On June 14, he released the follow-up single "Devil Is a Lie." The song was also extremely popular and peaked at number 32 on the Billboard 100. Both singles and a song teased in July are expected to be on Richman’s debut album Coyote, slated to be released this fall.

 

Another Virginia native, Shaboozey started releasing music in 2014 after founding production company V Picture Films. In the same year he released his first single "Jeff Gordon". Three years later he signed with Republic Records and the following year released his debut album, Lady Wrangler.

Shaboozey started gaining immense success after being featured on Beyonce’s eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter (2024). The album shined a major light on black country artists and led to a significant increase in streams. Shaboozey took advantage of new eyes on his music and released "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" on April 12. According to his manager the release was pushed up by three weeks to capitalize. It worked as the song peaked at number one on the Billboard 100. The success of "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" led to the release of his third studio album, Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going. The album was his most critically acclaimed, as he became the first male black artist to chart at number one on Billboard's Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts at the same time.

Your favorite artist's favorite artist, Chappell Roan began playing the piano at 10 and started performing at 13 at her school's talent show. At 14 she auditioned for America's Got Talent and began uploading covers on YouTube. She also started writing her own original music and released "Die Young" under her actual name Kayleigh Rose. She caught the attention of the music label Atlantic Records and got signed on May 8th, 2015. A year later she adopted the stage name Chappell Roan to honor her late grandfather, Dennis K. Chappell. On August 3, 2017, she released her first single as Roan, "Good Hurt." A year later, she moved to Los Angeles and started working with songwriter and producer Dan Nigro.

In 2020 she was dropped from Atlantic Records and for the next few years she worked as a production assistant and several other jobs. Her career saw a shift in 2022 when she signed a publishing deal with Sony. Afterwards, she released "Naked in Manhattan," her first song in two years. She then released "Femininomenon" (August 2022), "Casual" (March 2023), "Kaleidoscope" (March 2023), "Red Wine Supernova" (May 2023) and "Hot to Go!" (August 2023). On September 22, 2023, she released her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The album was extremely popular and was included on many of the best-albums-of-2023 year-end lists. Although it received lots of attention and success, it wasn't until she opened for Olivia Rodrigo's Guts World Tour that she started getting deserved recognition. In her first week opening, her streams rose by 32%. Also, during this time she was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and had an NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert performance.

Following up on new success, she released the single "Good Luck, Babe!", as the expected lead single of her next album. The song immediately became a success as the single received 7 million streams in its first week. "Good Luck, Babe!" also became Roan’s first charting song on the Billboard 100 and it caused her monthly listeners to increase by more than 500% from February to April. It is the tenth song on the Billboard Hot 100, while The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess peaked at five on the Billboard 200, after the single’s release. Its success led people to discover her earlier music, as five previous singles began charting. Those being, "Pink Pony Club" at 50, "Femininomenon" at 96, "Casual" at 79, "Red Wine Supernova" at 46, and "Hot to Go!" at 26.

Her recent successes have led to co-signs by Elton John, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and more. Fans have called her a "queer pop icon" and praise her for her lyrics and authenticity.
