Pitchfork's Top 100 Albums of the Decade (so far) has a new leader: Fiona Apple's Fetch the Bolt Cutters. Released in 2020, this groundbreaking album marked Apple's first release in eight years and quickly solidified its place as a modern classic.

Recorded largely on GarageBand, Fetch the Bolt Cutters features long, improvised takes and unconventional percussion, showcasing Apple's raw talent and unique artistic vision. The album's unedited vocals and extended tracks are a testament to Apple's deliberate approach and her comfort with the limitations of the software.

Thematically, Fetch the Bolt Cutters explores freedom, oppression, and personal growth themes. Apple's lyrics, inspired by a quote from the TV series The Fall, call for liberation from toxic situations and self-imposed limitations. The album also delves into complex relationships, bullying, and sexual assault, offering a candid and vulnerable exploration of the human experience. Despite its heavy subject matter, Fetch the Bolt Cutters is Apple's most humorous album, showcasing her wit and ability to find joy in the darkest times.

Upon its release, the album was met with overwhelming critical acclaim. It earned a perfect 100 score from Pitchfork and a 98/100 on Metacritic, making it one of the highest-rated albums of all time. Major publications like The Guardian, The Telegraph, and The Independent awarded it five-star reviews, praising its artistry, emotional depth, and cultural significance. Fetch the Bolt Cutters went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, and the track "Shameika" earned the Grammy for Best Rock Performance.
