Every costume piece was handmade, and sets, locations, décor, props, and construction builds were made to be as authentic as possible to 1600s Japan.

These things led the show to become the first Japanese-language series to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. Only Murders in the Building is a murder mystery comedy-drama series created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman. Martin, who also stars in the show as Charles-Haden Savage plays a semi-retired actor who saw success in the 1990s as the star of a hit tv show. The three of them all live in an affluent Upper West Side apartment building. After a murder in the building, the three of them try to solve the case. This leads them to creating a true crime podcast titled, Only Murders in the Building. The third season, released in August 2023 saw the trio investigate the murder of Ben (Paul Rudd), the star of Oliver’s new play. The season achieved 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while on Metacritic the season achieved 77 percent. Fans and critics alike loved the show, especially the third season for its remarkable cast. Martin, Short, and Gomez all have very accomplished careers, and the star power became even bigger with the addition of Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep in the third season.

Another thing that makes the show even more realistic is the set design. Set designers worked to make the apartment building mysterious by using warm colors. The trio’s apartment buildings also help to tell their stories. Savage’s apartment, bought by him in the ‘90s, features newer appliances and art. This shows how put together the character is. The is opposite of Mora’s space as her apartment is being renovated, which could denote she isrenovating her life. The show, which already has four Emmy’s, has seen Steve Martin become the oldest nominee in the best lead actor in a comedy series category at 78 years old. He breaks his own record set during season one of the show.

The fourth season has earned a 93 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a higher critical score than season one.
