PopBase: Summer's Hottest TV Lineup!

Summer is here and while many may be going camping or going to the beach, many will be watching new tv shows and new seasons of some favorites. The hottest and brightest season of the year has already brought shows like House of the Dragon and The Acolyte, while Love Island USA saw one of its biggest seasons ever. Among these shows, there are a plethora of others coming which include new seasons of Cobra Kai, Futurama, and Only Murders in the Building with new shows A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, Dance Moms: A New Era, and The Golden Bachelorette.


1. Cobra Kai — (Netflix) July 18

Cobra Kai, which is a martial arts comedy-drama onNetflix is gearing up for its sixth season. The show, a sequel to the original The Karate Kid films, began on YouTube Red/Premium for the first two seasons from 2018-2019. For the third season, the series was acquired by Netflix.

The plot follows reprised character Johnny as he decides to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo. Throughout the seasons Johnny helps kids who feel like outcasts learn karate while reigniting an old feud. The very successfulshow has attained high viewership during its run. Fans have praised the show’s writing and humor, and the show’s third season is Emmy nominated.

Season six will feature Ralph Macchio (Daniel LaRusso), William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence), Courtney Henggeler(Amanda LaRusso), Xolo Maridueña (Miguel Diaz), and a plethora of other characters. The sixth and final season will consist of fifteen episodes and will drop in three parts, on July 18, November 28, and in 2025.


2. Those About to Die — Season 1 (Peacock)July 18

Those About to Die will be coming to Peacock on July 18th in the U.S., and internationally to Prime Video on July 19th. The drama set in Ancient Rome, will star Anthony Hopkins with additional cast including Dimitri Leonidas, Gabriella Pession, Lorenzo Richelmy and Tom Hughes. Itis adapted from Daniel P. Mannix's 1958 novelof the same name and reportedly had a budget of $140 million. The series will explore the infamous gladiatorial competitions and will uncover the ins and outs of sports, politics, and dynasties during this era.

3. Batman: Caped Crusader - (Prime Video)August 1

This animated series coming to Prime Video, will see Batman go against a “gallery of villains” in Gotham City. In a statement, Prime Video said,” Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human: The Batman. His one-man crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications.”

The series will bring a reimagined version of Batman mythology. The show will take place in the 1940s and will have retro designs. Another reimagining will come with Harley Quinn. The villain will be a lot more intimidating and will not have a relationship with the Joker.

The series dropping on August 1st consists of 10 episodesand will be available in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. The ensemble cast includes many including Hamish Linklater, Jamie Chung, Diedrich Bader, Christina Ricci, and Minnie Driver.

4. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder – (Netflix) August 1

Another book-to-tv show adaptation A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is coming to Netflix. This murder mystery series which originally aired on BBC Three in the UK and Ireland follows Pip Fitz-Amobi as she investigates a murder at her high school five years prior. 17-year-old Fitz-Amobi will be played by Emma Myers of Wednesday fame, and will also star Asha Banks, Raiko Gohara, Zain Iqbal, and Jude Morgan-Collie, among other stars.

The six-episode season adapted by Poppy Cogan from the mystery novel of the same name will be 45-minutes each. There are plans to adapt the next books in the series, if the show gets renewed.

5. Dance Moms: A New Era – (Hulu) August 7

Glo Hampton will be bringing in a whole new era of dancers in this reboot of the hit show Dance Moms. The original show on Lifetime, which ran for eight years and eight seasons, saw dance teacher Abby Lee Miller guild young dancers as they competitively compete across the country. The show was very popular as it spawned many memes, memorable moments, and award nominations including a win at the 2015 Kids’ Choice Awards.

The reboot premiering on Hulu, will follow the same premise with new coach Glo Hampton leading new dancers at the prestigious dance school Studio Bleu. The show promises to bring drama and will be premiering on August 7th.

6. Emily in Paris - (Netflix) August 15

Netflix’s Emily in Paris follows Emily Cooper (Lily Collins), an American aspiring marketing executive woman who moves to Paris to give a French marketing firm an American viewpoint. While in Paris, she navigates work, her love life, and her friendships. Season four is split into two parts airing on August 15th and on September 12th.

Creator Darren Star said, “Emily finds herself with a busy travel schedule in Season 4 of Emily in Paris. From the French Alps to the piazzas of Rome, viewers will vicariously experience amazing new locations through Emily’s eyes. Expect new characters, a lot more drama, romance, and a whole new language to try and master.”Along with Lily Collins, the show also stars Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Sylvie Grateau), Ashley Park (Mindy Chen), and many other characters.

7. Bel Air - (Peacock) August 15

Another show airing on Peacock this summer is Bel-Air. This dramatic reimagining of the ‘90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air stars Jabari Banks (Will Smith), Adrian Holmes (Phil Banks), Cassandra Freeman (Vivian Banks),Coco Jones (Hillary Banks), and many others. The story follows Will’s journey from West Philadelphia to Bel-Air, as he navigates a new lifestyle and high school.

The third season which will arrive on August 15th will see Will and Carlton out for the summer finding new hobbiesand Ashley gearing up for high school. We will also see Hillary’s romantic relationship tested and Vivian and Phil going through some marital challenges. As of July 17th, atrailer for the upcoming season has not been released but nine first-look photos have been.

8. Only Murders in the Building - (Hulu) August 27

Only Murders in the Building follows a trio of strangers living in an affluent New York City apartment building. The trio played by Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, and Martin Short all share an interest in true crime podcasts. After the murder of one of the buildings residents, the trio decide to investigate and produce their own podcast.

Each season has followed the same premise, and in season four high profile celebrities are set to join the cast. Newcomers include Molly Shannon, Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, Kumail Nanjiani, Melissa McCarthy, and Zach Galifianakis, while Meryl Streep will be returning for her second season. Season four will also see a move to Los Angeles from New York for a couple of episodes. The show has been very successful with multiple Emmy Award nominations and Golden Globe nominations. Season four will be coming to Hulu on August 27th.

Along with all these shows, there are plenty of others also coming this summer. Some of those include The Umbrella Academy, Lady in the Lake, and The Golden Bachelorette.What shows are you excited to see this summer?
